Myefski Architects’ new office space was created with a central focus toward sustainability and environmental sensitivity. Encompassing the entire top floor of a landmarked building in the heart of Downtown Evanston, the space utilizes a number of existing features from the previous tenant.  Existing vertical circulation was brought up to current codes, while minimizing the effect on adjacent spaces, and with minimal materials.  Existing delineation of space was mostly maintained, re-appropriated for Myefski Architects required uses.  Existing finishes were also maintained, refurbished/refreshed with environmentally sensitive materials such as low-VOC paints, carpet cleaning products, and energy efficient lighting.  Existing HVAC systems were tested and cleaned for optimal operations, and a plan for future replacement with higher efficiency units is underway.  Even existing built-in casework was maintained and modified as needed, and existing or refurbished furniture is being utilized throughout the space.  And, a somewhat unexpected benefit: natural daylight that floods each space during most working hours exceeds lighting needs, and allows for additional energy savings when artificial light sources are periodically taken out of service. In all, over 95% of existing spaces, features, and construction waste was maintained, reused, and recycled.

Myefski Architects is excited to be able to use their new space as an incubator for further studies in efficiency and as a testing ground for new ideas in sustainability.  We expect to apply many of these learned lessons to our future projects.
